USRowing Training Center Wins Championship Men's Four at 2008 Head of the Charles Regatta

October 20, 2008 (Cambridge, Mass.) - USRowing Training Center won the championship men's four event this past weekend at the 2008 Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, Mass.

The USTC crew of coxswain Ned DelGuercio, Jake Cornelius, Charlie Cole, Glenn Ochal and David Banks won the race by nearly nine seconds over University of Wisconsin - Men's Crew. The USTC entry finished with a time of 15:57.344, with Wisconsin crossing in a 16:06.219.

In the championship women's eight, Canada's London Training Center won gold with a time of 16:02.507, followed by ASR Nereus and Yale University. The USRowing Training Center entry of coxswain Katie Bitz, Megan Smith, Susan Francia, Meghan Musnicki, Kady Glessner, Kelsie Chaudoin, Megan Kalmoe, Kate Bertko and Anne Kennedy finished fifth in a 16:30.359. The University of Washington won the championship men's eight in a 14:28.087.

In the championships men's double sculls, Bantam Boat Club's Andrew Liverman and Peter Graves ended USRowing's Sam Stitt and J. Sloan DuRoss' two-year hold on the title by less than one second. Liverman and Graves crossed the finish line with a time of 16:05.495, while Stitt and DuRoss finished with a time of 16:06.297. Representing California Rowing Club, the Olympic double of Elliot Hovey and Wes Piermarini finished third in a 16:23.337.

New Zealand's Hawkes Bay Rowing Club entry of Juliette Haigh and Emma Twigg won the championship women's double sculls in a 17:46.037. The Princeton Training Center entry of Sarah Trowbridge and Stesha Carle finished second in an 18:00.972, while Potomac Boat Club's Margaret Matia and Elizabeth Mygatt finished third in an 18:27.535. The USRowing duo of Olympians Michelle Guerette and Caryn Davies finished fifth with an official time of 18:33.338, after a 20-second penalty.

Invercargill Rowing Club's and New Zealand Olympian Nathan Cohen won the championship men's single sculls in a 17:32.995. GMS Rowing Center's Michael Sivigny edged Ridley Graduate Boat Club's Fraser Berkhout by 0.154 seconds to finish second in a 17:41.541, while lightweight Tom Paradiso, the lone 2008 U.S. Olympic Team member entered in the race, finished fourth in a 17:48.246.

In the championship women's single sculls, Cambridge Boat Club's Gevvie Stone clocked a 19:12.503 to win the race by just under six seconds. Stone's parents, Gregg Stone and Lisa (Hanson) Stone, both won the men's and women's championship single sculls, respectively, in 1977. National Team members Liane Malcos of Riverside Boat Club and Brett Sickler of Potomac Boat Club finished second and third, respectively. Malcos finished with a time of 19:18.166, while Sickler finished with a time of 19:24.908. 2008 Olympian Margot Shumway, who stroked the women's quadruple sculls in Beijing, finished fourth.
