Eighteen National Titles Awarded Sunday at 2009 USRowing Youth National Championships

BETHEL, Ohio - Eighteen national titles were awarded on Sunday at the 15th-annual USRowing Youth National Championships on Harsha Lake in Bethel, Ohio.
In the women's double sculls, GMS Rowing Center's Kim Hopewell and Celia Kohl took an open-water lead by the 1,000-meter mark en route to a 3.68-second victory over Detroit Boat Club's Alexandria Chrumka and Allison DeClerq. Hopewell and Kohl crossed the finish line with a time of 7:49.32, with Chrumka and DeClerq finishing in a 7:53.00. Archbishop Prendergast High School's Jackie Lees and Jeanine Lees won the bronze medal in a 7:57.03, finishing less than one second ahead of Long Beach Junior Crew.
Just over an hour later, Hopewell joined teammates Kelsey Reelick, Anna Kobayashi and Mairi McKellop in the GMS women's quadruple sculls to win a second national title. GMS crossed 7.09 seconds ahead of Pocock Rowing Center to finish first in a 7:16:75. Pocock took silver in a 7:23:84, followed by Saratoga Rowing Association in a 7:25:05.
Long Beach Junior Crew's Michelle Johnson and Alexandra Cours held off Tempe Junior Crew's Casey Redman and Sophie Heywood to win the final of the lightweight women's double sculls. Johnson and Cours finished with a time of 8:08.49, crossing the line 1.08 seconds ahead of Redman and Heywood. Lake Oswego Community Rowing's Jessica Lund and Katie Smith edged out Hockaday School's Emily McCombs and Casey Watters by 0.23 seconds for the bronze medal. The Lake Oswego boat clocked an 8:10.71.
Newport Aquatic Center dominated in the men's eights, winning gold in both the eight and lightweight eight events. The Newport eight grabbed a two-seat lead at the 1,500-meter mark and crossed the finish line 2.43 seconds ahead of Phillips Academy, clocking a 5:57.67 for the win. Phillips crossed in a 5:59.24 for the silver medal. In a close race for third, Kent School crossed just 0.01 seconds ahead of Capital Crew for the bronze medal in a 6:00.30. In the lightweight men's eight, Newport won in a 6:10:99 for the gold. Marin Rowing Association took silver in a 6:11:22, with Community Rowing, Inc. crossing third in a 6:15:47.
In the women's single sculls, Friends Academy's Nicole Bielawski won the gold medal with a time of 8:27.59. River City Rowing Club's Samantha Warren won the silver medal in an 8:32.15, followed by Hillsborough High School's Katie Burke in an 8:34.58.
Matt Maddamma dominated the men's single sculls, clocking a 7:36.99 to win by nearly 13 seconds. Maddamma took command of the race in the first 500 meters and continued to walk away from the field over the rest of the race. Stanton-River Bank Rowing's Mason Leasure finished second in a 7:49.76, while Marina Aquatic Center's Quinn Harper finished third in a 7:50.94.
In the lightweight men's double sculls, Lake Union Crew's Michael Wales and Aidan O'Sullivan pulled away from the field over the final 600 meters to win the race by nearly six seconds. Wales and O'Sullivan stroked a 7:03.70. New Canaan High School Crew Club's top boat of Andrew Campbell and Alec Buckenheimer finished second in a 7:09.47, followed by Long Beach Junior Crew's Mark Reinis and Nick Trojan in a 7:13.95.
After winning its semifinal yesterday by more than 12 seconds, the Saugatuck Rowing Association duo of Owen Traynor and Max Meyer-Bosse won gold in the men's double sculls, clocking a 7:07.93 for the win. NorCal Crew's Max Mannistro and Zachary Segal crossed second in a 7:11.11, with Lake Stevens Rowing Club's Andrew McCrea and Brad Dickson in a 7:13.92 for third.
In the women's pair, the Oakland Strokes duo of Kelly Bauer and Barbara Barnes finished nearly five seconds ahead of Saratoga Rowing Association's Kate Russell and Lizzy Fitzhenry for the gold medal. Bauer and Barnes, who recorded the fastest time in yesterday's semifinals, won in an 8:25:11, with Saratoga crossing second in an 8:30:75. Lakeside School Crew's Camilla Gardiner and Claire Murphy finished third in an 8:31:90.
Rose City Rowing Club took home gold and bronze medals in the men's pair. The A boat entry of Michael Evans and Cameron McAlpine took a boat-length lead in the first 500 meters and held on to win in a 7:42.80. Serra High School's Chris Chang and Zachary Felise pushed ahead of Rose City's B boat in the sprint to finish second in a 7:47.53, with Rose City B clocking a 7:50.11.
In the men's quadruple sculls, the Pocock Rowing Center crew of Nick Pickard, Alex Johnson, Ben Bauman and Sam Pettet edged out New Canaan High School Crew Club for the gold medal. New Canaan had a three-seat advantage at the 1,000-meter mark but couldn't keep up with Pocock's surge in the sprint. Pocock clocked a 6:21.31 for the win, with New Canaan in a 6:23.63 for second place. Lake Union Crew finished third in a 6:27.42.
Los Gatos Rowing Club won gold in the lightweight women's eight with a 3.58-second victory over Long Beach Junior Crew. Los Gatos led the race from wire-to-wire to cross in a 6:59.58, holding off Long Beach's charge with 500 meters to go. Long Beach clocked a 7:03.56, with Maritime Rowing Club in third with a 7:07.53.
In the women's four with coxswain, Peddie School finished nearly 10 seconds ahead of Mercer Junior Rowing Club for the gold medal. Peddie clocked a 7:24:98, with Mercer finishing second in a 7:34:47. Winsor Crew finished third in a 7:34:83.
Everett Rowing Association came back from third place at the halfway point to win the final of the lightweight men's four with coxswain. Everett's crew of coxswain Charles Forrest, Robert Aikman, Austin Overland, Mackenzie Baker and Nikita Cardenas finished first in a 6:51.25, with Long Beach Junior Crew clocking a 6:53:81 for silver. Canisius High School finished third in a 6:54:19.
Noble & Greenough School's crew of coxswain Stone Cao, Matthew O'Leary, Gordon Eccles, Cameron Dupre and Ian Graves won gold in the men's four with coxswain, crossing in a 6:38:21. Community Rowing, Inc. took silver in a 6:42:95, followed by Choate Rosemary Hall in third with a 6:45:87.
In the women's lightweight four with coxswain, Cincinnati Country Day School won gold in a 7:45:16. Holy Names Academy clocked a 7:47:81 for silver, with San Diego Rowing Club edging out Nardin Academy by less than a second for third, crossing in a 7:50:33.
After recording the fastest time of yesterday's semifinals in the women's eight, Marin Rowing Association won gold in a 6:40:11, crossing nearly five seconds ahead of Phillips Exeter Academy's time of 6:45:05. Maritime Rowing Club crossed in a 6:47:41 for the bronze medal, edging out New Trier High School Rowing by less than a second.
Hosted by the Cincinnati Junior Rowing Club, the event featured more than 1,500 participants competing for national titles in 18 events.
