USRowing Training Center/California Rowing Club's Warren Anderson (Paso Robles, Calif.) and teammate Brett Sickler (Los Gatos, Calif.) won the men's and women's single sculls, respectively, on Sunday to highlight the final day of racing at the 2009 USRowing National Selection Regatta #1 at the Finn M.W. Caspersen Rowing Center on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J.

For the men's and women's single sculls, NSR #1 served as the first step towards making the 2009 Senior National Team that will represent the United States at the 2009 FISA World Rowing Championships in Poznan, Poland. Anderson and Sickler earned the right to compete at a world cup race of their choosing. If they finish in the top four (or top half if there are fewer than eight entries) at their world cup race, then they will be nominated to the national team. Anderson and Sickler have until May 11 to make their choice.

In the men's single sculls, Anderson controlled the race, winning by just under four seconds. Anderson held a comfortable margin throughout the entire race, finishing with a time of 7:08.704. USTC's Glenn Ochal (Philadelphia, Pa.) finished second in a 7:12.683, while USTC/CRC's Sam Stitt (McLean, Va.) finished third in a 7:13.939.

In the women's single sculls, Sickler took the top spot, crossing the finish line in a 7:54.162. She finished nearly three seconds ahead of Potomac Boat Club's Margot Shumway (Westlake, Ohio), who clocked a 7:56.840. USTC's Ellen Tomek (Flushing, Mich.) finished just 0.121 seconds behind Shumway in a 7:56.961.

For the remaining events, NSR #1 served as an opportunity for crews to test their speed in preparation for future selection events, selection camp and trials.

The USRowing Training Center/Malta Boat Club duo of Andy Quinn (Honeoye Falls, N.Y.) and Shane Madden (Ambler, Pa.) won the final of the lightweight men's double sculls, finishing in a 6:46.514. Vesper Boat Club's Dan Scholz (Springfield, Ore.) and Sam Cunningham (Pittsburgh, Pa.) finished second in a 6:52.909.

Pocock Rowing Center's Michelle Trannel (East Dubuque, Ill.) and Kristin Hedstrom (Concord, Mass.) won the final of the lightweight women's double sculls. The duo finished more than four seconds ahead of Riverside Boat Club's Hillary Saeger (Dedham, Mass.) and Stefanie Sydlik (Allentown, Pa.). Trannel and Hedstrom clocked a 7:26.170, with Saeger and Sydlik finishing in a 7:32.739.
