Day Two Complete at 2009 USRowing Spring Speed Order

Racing in the single sculls and men's pair at the 2009 USRowing Spring Speed Order was completed Friday morning at the Finn M.W. Caspersen Rowing Center on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J.

USRowing Training Center's Josh Inman (Hillsboro, Ore.), a 2008 Olympic bronze medalist in the men's eight, and Charlie Cole (New Canaan, Conn.), a 2008 Under 23 World Champion in the men's eight, won the final of the men's pair. The duo clocked a 6:48.274 to finish 1.6 seconds ahead of teammates Brett Newlin (Riverton, Wyo.) and David Banks (Potomac, Md.). Newlin and Banks, who both rowed in the four at the Olympics in Beijing, finished with a time of 6:49.884. USTC's Steven Coppola (Buffalo, N.Y.), an Olympic bronze medalist, and Giuseppe Lanzone (Annandale, Va.), a teammate of Newlin and Banks in Beijing, finished third with a time of 7:00.901.

In the women's single sculls, Potomac Boat Club's Margot Shumway (Westlake, Ohio), a 2008 Olympian in the quadruple sculls, won the final by clocking a 7:57.834. Shumway finished just over two seconds ahead of USRowing Training Center's Kathleen Bertko (Oakland, Calif.), who crossed in an 8:00.236. USTC's Ellen Tomek (Flushing, Mich.), a member of the double sculls crew in Beijing, finished third in an 8:04.488.

USRowing Training Center's Glenn Ochal (Philadelphia, Pa.) continued his winning ways in the final of the men's single sculls. After winning Thursday morning's time trial and clocking the fastest time of the heats, Ochal crossed the finish line with a time of 7:19.534, finishing more than two seconds ahead of New York Athletic Club's James Dietz (Amherst Mass.). Dietz stroked a 7:21.842. Vesper Boat Club's Ben Churchill (Portland, Ore.) took third place, finishing with a time of 7:27.262.

USRowing Training Center's Andrew Quinn (Honeoye Falls, N.Y.) finished less than two seconds ahead of teammate Tom Paradiso (Blue Bell, Pa.), a 2008 Olympian, to win the lightweight men's single sculls. Quinn crossed the finish line with a time of 7:25.953, while Paradiso finished in a 7:27.895. GMS Rowing Center's Jonathan Winter (New Haven, Conn.) finished third in a 7:29.439.

Pocock Rowing Center's Abby Broughton (Tetonia, Idaho) won the final of the lightweight women's single sculls by just under two seconds. Broughton finished with a time of 8:12.025, with Undine Barge Club's Meghan Sarbanis (Hampstead, N.H.) clocking an 8:14.005 for second place. Kristin Hedstrom (Concord, Mass.) finished third with a time of 8:21.486.

Informal racing continues on Saturday in double sculls and fours. The top 12 finishers in the singles will be placed into double sculls combinations, while the men's pairs will be placed into fours. Rowers will race twice, with lineup switches taking place between the two rows. Racing begins at 7:30 a.m.
