Day One Complete at 2009 USRowing Spring Speed Order

Finals in the four single sculls events and men's pair are set following Thursday's racing at the 2009 USRowing Spring Speed Order at the Finn M.W. Caspersen Rowing Center on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J.

After winning Thursday morning's time trial in the men's single sculls, USRowing Training Center's Glenn Ochal (Philadelphia, Pa.) came back to clock the fastest time of the afternoon heats, winning the first heat with a time of 7:10.062. Penn AC's Stephen Whelpley (Moquon, Wis.) also advanced to the final, finishing second to Ochal in a 7:15.080. Vesper Boat Club's Ben Churchill (Portland, Ore.) won the second heat with a time of 7:15.078, while USTC's Jake Cornelius (Brooktondale, N.Y.) finished second in a 7:17.517. In the third heat, New York Athletic Club's James Dietz (Amherst Mass.) finished with a time of 7:13.296. USTC's Michael Sivigny (Hudson, N.H.) grabbed the last spot in the final, finishing second to Dietz in a 7:17.180.

USRowing Training Center's Kathleen Bertko (Oakland, Calif.), who entered as the top seed after winning Thursday morning's time trial, won the first heat of the women's single sculls, crossing the line in a 7:49.785. Teammate Sarah Trowbridge (Guilford, Conn.) finished less than three seconds behind in a 7:52.498. In the second heat, Potomac Boat Club's Margot Shumway (Westlake, Ohio), a 2008 Olympian, recorded a winning time of 7:52.994. Cambridge Boat Club's Gevvie Stone (Newton, Mass.) finished second in a 7:55.647. Olympian Ellen Tomek (Flushing, Mich.) won the third heat in a 7:55.213, while USTC teammate Stesha Carle (Long Beach, Calif.) finished second in a 7:57.969 to earn a spot in tomorrow's final.

In the lightweight men's single sculls, USRowing Training Center's Andrew Quinn (Honeoye Falls, N.Y.) won the first heat by less than 0.2 seconds. Quinn clocked a 7:22.385 to finish ahead of Pocock Rowing Center's Kenneth McMahon (Ladysmith, Wis.), who stroked a 7:22.568. McMahon also advanced to the final. Racing in the second heat, GMS Rowing Center's Jonathan Winter (New Haven, Conn.) crossed the finish line with a time of 7:16.413. USTC/Malta Boat Club's Shane Madden (Ambler, Pa.) finished second in a 7:18.912. USTC's Tom Paradiso (Blue Bell, Pa.), a 2008 Olympian, won the third heat by just over one second, clocking a 7:22.241. Vesper Boat Club's Dan Scholz (Springfield, Ore.) finished second in a 7:23.266.

Pocock Rowing Center's Abby Broughton (Tetonia, Idaho) followed up her victory in the morning time trial by winning the first heat of the lightweight women's single sculls. Broughton clocked an 8:04.055. Teammate Michelle Trannel (East Dubuque, Ill.) finished just behind in second place with a time of 8:05.894. Undine Barge Club's Meghan Sarbanis (Hampstead, N.H.) won the second heat in an 8:05.068, finishing just over one second ahead of Kristin Hedstrom (Concord, Mass.). Hedstrom clocked an 8:06.278. Pocock's Lindsey Hochman (Virginia Beach, Va.) won the third heat, crossing the finish line with a time of 8:04.711. Undine's Nicole Nelson (Santa Rosa, Calif.) finished second in an 8:05.493.

In the men's pair, USRowing Training Center's Josh Inman (Hillsboro, Ore.), a 2008 Olympic bronze medalist, and Charlie Cole (New Canaan, Conn.) won the time trial. The duo clocked a 6:44.824 to finish less than two seconds ahead of 2008 Olympians Brett Newlin (Riverton, Wyo.) and David Banks (Potomac, Md.), who finished with a time of 6:46.035. USTC's Chris Callaghan (Tualatin, Ore.) and Troy Kepper (Tallahassee, Fla.) finished third in a 6:51.198. All six boats advanced to tomorrow's final.

Friday's finals begin at 7 a.m. The top 12 finishers in the singles will then be placed into double sculls combinations, while the top six finishers in the men's pair will be placed into fours.
