Finals Set at 2009 USRowing Youth National Championships

BETHEL, Ohio - Finals are now set at the 15^th-annual USRowing Youth National Championships on Harsha Lake in Bethel, Ohio. Hosted by the Cincinnati Junior Rowing Club, the event features more than 1,500 participants competing for national titles in 18 events. Racing concludes with finals on Sunday starting at 8 a.m.

Long Beach Junior Crew's Michelle Johnson and Alexandra Cours recorded the fastest time in the semifinals of the lightweight women's double sculls. Racing in the third of three semifinals, Johnson and Cours finished with a time of 8:03.91, finishing more than seven seconds ahead of Lake Oswego Community Rowing. Tempe Junior Crew's Casey Redman and Sophie Heywood won the first semifinal, clocking an 8:08.79 to finish nearly eight seconds ahead of Emma Willard School. Hockaday School's Emily McCombs and Casey Watters won the second semifinal in an 8:09.85, with Dallas Rowing Club finishing second.

With Johnson and Cours in the stern pair, Long Beach Junior Crew also clocked the fastest time in the semifinals of the lightweight women's eight. Long Beach stroked a 7:06.11 to finish nearly six seconds ahead of Sammamish Rowing Association. Los Gatos Rowing Club won the other semifinal with a time of 7:09.69, finishing more than five seconds ahead of Community Rowing, Inc.

Two hours later, four members of the Long Beach lightweight eight came back to win their semifinal in the lightweight women's four with coxswain. Rowing in the first of two semis, Long Beach recorded a two-second victory over Holy Names Academy, crossing the finish line in a 7:57.89. Cincinnati Country Day School won the other semifinal with the day's fastest time. Country Day clocked a 7:52.60 to finish nearly six seconds ahead of Nardin Academy.

Steel City Rowing Club's Matt Maddamma had no trouble winning the first semifinal of the men's single sculls, clocking the fastest time of the day. Maddamma crossed the finish line in a 7:30.04, more than 17 seconds ahead of Friends of Shenendehowa Crew's Ian Fisher. In a much tighter race, Marina Aquatic Center's Quinn Harper finished just under two seconds ahead of Stanton-River Bank Rowing's Mason Leasure to win the second semifinal in a 7:41.52.

In the women's double sculls, GMS Rowing Center's Kim Hopewell and Celia Kohl recorded the top time, winning the second semifinal in a 7:54.63. Archbishop Prendergast High School's Jackie Lees and Jeanine Lees won the other semi in an 8:01.40. Hopewell came back to stroke the GMS Rowing Center women's quadruple sculls later in the morning. Racing in the second of two semifinals, GMS finished with a time of 7:08.89, defeating Saratoga Rowing Association by more than 11 seconds. Pocock Rowing Center won the other semifinal in a 7:18.55.

In the lightweight men's double sculls, New Canaan High School Crew Club took the top two spots in the first semifinal. New Canaan's top boat of Andrew Campbell and Alec Buckenheimer finished with a time of 7:14.64, 2.99 seconds ahead of the B boat. Lake Union Crew's Michael Wales and Aidan O'Sullivan won the second semifinal by nearly eight seconds over Long Beach Junior Crew, clocking a 7:01.66.

Saugatuck Rowing Club's Owen Traynor and Max Meyer-Bosse won the second semifinal of the men's double sculls with a time of 6:59.31. The duo finished more than 12 seconds ahead of Cincinnati Country Day School. Lake Oswego Community Rowing's Pryce Waites and Thomas Cameron won the first semifinal in a 7:02.92, finishing just 0.34 seconds ahead of NorCal Crew.

Oakland Strokes' Kelly Bauer and Barbara Barnes recorded the top time in the semifinals of the women's pair. Racing in the third of three semis, the duo finished with a time of 8:08.10. Saratoga Rowing Association's Kate Russell and Lizzy Fitzhenry and Pacific Rowing Club's Claire Fisher and Deanna Wong won the other two semifinals.

In the men's pair, Rose City Rowing Club won both semifinals. Rose City's B entry of Patrick Marre and Matt Van Eerden won the second semi in a 7:31.04, while the A entry of Michael Evans and Cameron McAlpine won the first race in a 7:31.66.

Community Rowing and Noble & Greenough School won the semifinals of the men's four with coxswain. In the first race, Noble finished with a time of 6:47.85, while Community Rowing won the second race in a 6:46.62.

Racing in the third of three semifinals in the lightweight men's eight, Newport Aquatic Center clocked the fastest time of the day. Newport AC crossed the line with a time of 6:12.39, finishing five seconds ahead of Community Rowing, Inc. Marin Rowing Association won the first semifinal in a time of 6:12.93, while Everett Rowing Association edged out Canisius High School by 0.06 seconds to win the second semifinal in a 6:14.57.

In the women's eight, Marin Rowing Association finished with the top time, winning the third semifinal by nearly five seconds with a time of 6:49.78. Los Gatos Rowing Club and Maritime Rowing Club won the other two semifinals, clocking a 6:51.75 and 6:51.01, respectively.

Capital Crew clocked the fastest time of the men's eight, winning the first semifinal by 0.57 seconds in a 6:07.26 over Capital City Rowing. Kent School won the second semifinal in a 6:07.98, while Phillips Academy won the third race in a 6:11.57.
