Brett was named USRowing's Male Athlete of the Year in 2006. He enjoys movies, brewing beer and rockin' some karaoke. Brett's favorite movies include "Tommy Boy," "Office Space," "The Princess Bride" and Bill Murray comedies. He enjoys classic rock and lists Journey as his favorite band. Brett said his favorite song to perform karaoke to is "Baby Got Back" by Sir-Mix-a-lot. He lists placing fourth in the men's four at the 2006 World Championships as his most memorable sporting achievement. Brett lists his parents as the most influential people in his sporting career. He began rowing after receiving a flyer in his dorm mailbox during his freshman year at Michigan State University. He can sleep through anything but the sound of his alarm clock. Brett swam and ran cross-country in high school. Brett runs his own business, TLB Engineering, where he does contract work programming microcontrollers.
